The Perennial Plant Association Awarded
Andrew Gagne a 2008 Scholarship Award

Hilliard, OH- July 31, 2008 - The Perennial Plant Association (PPA) awarded Andrew Gagne a 2008 Perennial Plant Association Scholarship Award. The PPA presented Gagne the award at the annual Perennial Plant Symposium and Trade Show in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 22, 2008.

Each year the PPA grants scholarship awards to students for excellent academic performance and potential participation in the perennial industry. Recipients also received a plaque and complimentary registration and lodging for the Perennial Plant Association Symposium.

Gagne is a third year student, majoring in Horticultural Technology with a focus in Ornamental Horticulture at Thompson School of Applied Science University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire. Gagne is the secretary of UNH Horticulture Club, a class tutor for Herbaceous Ornamental Plants, and on the landscape crew at The Mixed Border Nursery and Gardens.

A committee of 12 judges consisting of professional educators and industry representatives from across the United States selected the scholarship winners. The committee selected the recipients based upon their work with perennial plants, future plans in the industry, creativity, presentation, leadership, financial need, people skills, and scholastics. Applicants must have at least one quarter or semester left after the selection, major or minor in horticulture or related field of study and have at least a 3.0 grade point average. The committee also evaluates the applicant’s transcript, statement of purpose he or she submitted, and three letters of recommendation, including one from a PPA member.

The Symposium is the only event dedicated solely to the perennial industry and it draws professionals from across the world. This year’s event took place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Perennial Plant Association is a professional trade association dedicated to improving the perennial industry by providing education to enhance the production, promotion, and utilization of perennial plants.
